All You Hungry Caterpillars!

This week we are learning about caterpillars and butterflies. We are using the story, The Very Hungry Caterpillar by Eric Carle, in shared reading. We are also sequencing the story using the things the caterpillar eats on each day of the week.

We have two literacy center that focus on this. One activity creates an emergent reader that mirrors the story. The other activity creates sequencing cards for day of the week and caterpillar food.

I have used many activities in the past to bring the concept of sequencing alive, and these 2 activities are terrific. (I’ve even used the students’ arms as caterpillars that eat the food in the correct order!) But this year, I had another bright idea. (They do come, even at the end of the year!! :))

It came to me as I was thinking about a song the students and I have been singing all year. It is called Today is Sunday. It is from one of my all time favorite children’s music teacher, Dr. Jean.

Today is Sunday is about food and days of the week. I thought, What if I made a few changes to the song to make it about the Hungry Caterpillar? Here is the final new song, and what we’ve been singing with great gusto:

Today is Sunday
Sunday is a leaf
All you hungry caterpillars, well that’s OK

Today is Monday
Monday is an apple
Sunday is a leaf
All you hungry caterpillars, well that’s OK

Today is Tuesday
Tuesday is pears
Monday is an apple
Sunday is a leaf
All you hungry caterpillars, well that’s OK

Today is Wednesday
Wednesday is plums
Tuesday is pears
Monday is an apple
Sunday is a leaf
All you hungry caterpillars, well that’s OK

Today is Thursday
Thursday is strawberries
Wednesday is plums
Tuesday is pears
Monday is an apple
Sunday is a leaf
All you hungry caterpillars, well that’s OK

Today is Friday
Friday is oranges
Thursday is strawberries
Wednesday is plums
Tuesday is pears
Monday is an apple
Sunday is a leaf
All you hungry caterpillars, well that’s OK

Today is Saturday
Saturday is chocolate cake, ice-cream, a pickle, Swiss cheese, salami, a lollipop, a cherry pie, sausage, a cupcake , watermelon
Friday is oranges
Thursday is strawberries
Wednesday is plums
Tuesday is pears
Monday is an apple
Sunday is a leaf
All you hungry caterpillars, well that’s OK

Hope you can use this activity. We sure are loving it!!
