Mom and Dad would bring dinner into the family room, and we would all watch the Wonderful World of Disney together. Then we would play games, and just spend the evening with each other. What a great memory!
Here at St. Mary Monastery, we do the same thing. Our family tradition is called “Community Night,” and it takes place every week on Tuesday. We gather in the community room, right off the dining room, and first, listen to announcements and reminders (for example, last Tuesday I asked the Sisters to save milk caps for an upcoming project in my classroom).
Then we visit with each other, play games (dominoes and cards are very popular here!) and work on puzzles.
Community Night is a lot of fun, and we all try hard not to miss it. We want to be together! Last Tuesday, I played Phrase 10 with Sisters Claudia, Mary Jean, Martina and Margaret. We had a great time talking and laughing! At one point, Sr. Claudia and I started singing, “If you’re happy and you know it …” to tease Sr. Mary Jean, who doubled over laughing!
It’s hard to communicate the great feeling we get being together, but at the end of the night, we all are smiling and feeling … nourished.
Life in a monastery is all about seeking God, praying and contemplating. It’s also about having fun, and feeling great about our family. If you’ve ever had the desire for something more – something like this – in your life, contact me. I’ll tell you all about it. 🙂
