Today begins my 3-week adventure at Our Lady of Grace Monastery in Beech Grove, Ind. The workshop and retreat is for Benedictine Sisters preparing to make Final Monastic Profession. My friend Sister Belinda (from St. Scholastica in Chicago) and I will meet in Joliet, have breakfast at Bob Evans, and drive there together. I’ll post a photo when I arrive.
Sister Belinda and I both do lots of internet-based work for our communities, so one of the things that we are anxious about is a lack of wireless access for the 3 weeks. Aaargh! That’s a loooooong time!
I have written blogs on Benedictine values that will be posted throughout my time away, so at least it will LOOK like I have access. 🙂
Meantime, the Benedictine Spirituality Workshop and Retreat (BSWR) should be excellent. Here are some things that I am looking forward to:
*Workshops in Benedictine spirituality, which, as you might guess, I’m into. Some specific topics will probably include Benedictine values (which I’ve already written about for this blog, so I’m ready), monastic promises (they used to be called vows), our own vocation stories, and the blessings and challenges of religious life.
*Fellowship with other Benedictine women who are preparing to make their final monastic profession. Whenever we get together, we spend time comparing notes among our different communities, and talking about those blessings and challenges I mentioned before.
*Having the chance to share our community prayer. Each of us will lead prayer during either Lauds or Vespers throughout the first 2 weeks, and I have Vespers on July 3, which is the Feast of St. Thomas. I am bringing our entire service with me!
*Going on outings with the other Sisters, to parks and to Indianapolis.
*Our 6-day silent retreat.
As I mentioned before, the one thing I’m NOT looking forward to is no internet!!
I’ll tell you all about it when I get back. Meantime, stay tuned. Posts on Benedictine values are coming up!!
