When MacKenzie Visits the Monastery

MacKenzie enjoys spending time with 2 of her "grandmas," Sisters Michelle (left) and Mary Jean.

My sister MacKenzie is here visiting for a week … a vacation she’s been looking forward to. She loves to come to the monastery. As my father says, she has 30 grandmas to be with!

Mackenzie, who has a learning disability, is a great help here. She always offers to take the Sisters’ trays after meals. She helps Sister Anne prepare food bags for the food pantry. She has been helping me get ready for the new school year. Together, we have unpacked all the new materials that will replace the ones damaged in last year’s flood. We’ve also been organizing my classroom for the influx of new preschoolers.

MacKenzie plays Mexican Train with Sisters Mary Core and Charlotte. She has also invited a group to go for ice cream tonight. We will need to request the van.

On Sunday my mother made 6 coffee cakes for MacKenzie to share with us. Mackenzie and I

made signs to identify the flavors, and she hosted a wonderful treat for everyone after Mass on Monday morning.

Mackenzie joins in with everything. She attends all prayers, even that 7:15 a.m. one (it’s at 6:30 during the school year). She loves to visit with all. I am so blessed that my community takes her right in as family … and blessed to have joined a community that values family as much as I do.

If you would like to learn more about our community, contact me. I love to talk about it! 🙂
