We enjoyed our first birthday celebration of the year in our classroom last week. Birthdays at the ages of 3 and 4 are very exciting and important events, so I try to make them special at school as well!
We have a birthday treat brought from home by the Birthday Girl or Boy. (I ask that no store-bought cupcakes be sent … It looks like a cake shop has exploded in the classroom after snack when we have them!!)
Gifts for the Birthday Girl or Boy include a cheery birthday crown and card, a prayer card (we’re using Our Lady of Grace right now), and a small piece of candy.
The special student is also the leader for the day in the classroom. She or he gets to lead calendar, turn the lights on and off, feed the pets, water the plants, pass materials and serve as line leader. This is a very important day, after all!
Finally – thanks to a retiring kindergarten teacher at my dad’s school in Dubuque – we have a new addition to our birthday celebration. We have a blow-up Sponge Bob Square Pants sitting on a birthday cake! It’s the perfect photo opp (the parents think so, too)!
We all love celebrating birthdays. Beside celebrating the students’ special days, we celebrate Mary’s and Jesus’ birthdays as well. They are wonderful opportunities to help the children know that Jesus brings joy and happiness to us all. 🙂
