The Most Wonderful Time of the Year

preschooler pointing to advent flame

Every Monday in Advent we begin the day with a classroom prayer service.

First, we gather on the carpet. We settle ourselves and close our eyes.

I read the Sunday Gospel out loud, using language the children will understand.

We then sit in silence.

After a short time – these are preschoolers, after all! – I ask for a word or sentence they remember.

They all get the chance to share if they wish.

We then move quietly to our tables to color Advent pictures. I remind them that coloring can be a prayer when we think about God.

As they color and talk to God in their hearts, I play quiet Advent music.

During this time I call the students up to tape flames to the candles on their paper wreaths.

When we finish coloring we return to the carpet and continue our day.

Advent is the most wonderful time of the year!

Hi Amy, It’s a great way to introduce Lectio. It always amazes me how much little ones listen, and what captures their interest. These kids may be small and young but can also be very wise!
